The self - ionization of water known also as autoionization of water, is a reaction of ionization in pure water or aqueous solution, in which a water molecule (H₂O), loses the nucleus of one of its hydrogen atoms to become an hydroxide ion OH⁻.
In the other hand, the hydrogen nucleus, H⁺ inmediately protonates another water molecule to from hydronium (H₃O⁺).
This is an example of autoprotolysis and exemplifies the amphoteric behaviour of water.
The equation that express this self-ionization of water is:
H₂O + H₂O = H₃O⁺ + OH⁻
Otherwise, the heavy water D₂O self ionizes less than H₂O
The equation that expresses this self-ionization of heavy water is:
D₂O + D₂O = D₃O⁺ + OD⁻

Water self-ionization (also called water self-dissociation) is the chemical reaction in which two water molecules react to produce a hydronium ion (H3O +) and a hydroxide ion (OH-):
H2O ----> H+ + OH-
This is an example of autoprotolisis, and is based on the amphoteric nature of water.
Water, although pure, is not a simple collection of H2O molecules. Even in "pure water", sensitive equipment can detect a very low conductivity of 0.055 μS · cm-1. According to the Arrhenius theories, this is due to the presence of ions.
