Read the text and match the causes to their effects. Changing to Survive Have you ever seen a meerkat, an aye-aye, or a chameleon? The Earth has lots of animals and plants like these that live in extreme climates. They can live in the freezing tundra or the scorching desert. You probably could not live there, but they do! How can they live in such places? Over time, animals and plants develop characteristics that allow them to survive in extreme climates. This is known as adaptation. Animals develop specialized body parts to escape predators or find food easier, even in the most difficult environments. Some animals migrate to avoid the most extreme weather. Migration is the seasonal movement of animals. Monarch butterflies travel 5000 kilometers from northeastern United States and Canada to Mexico every winter to escape the cold. Other animals find ways to hide from predators to survive. Some of them blend into their environment. For example, flat fish look like rocks or sand. Their predators can’t see them in the water. CAUSE EFFECT Some ecosystems have extreme climates. Animals need to find food and protect themselves from predators. Plants and animals need to survive extreme weather in different biomes such as tundras and deserts. In many climates, seasons change and so does the weather. Animals develop useful body parts to help them survive and avoid danger. Some animals migrate to different locations at different parts of the year. Plants and animals must adapt to their environments if they want to survive in difficult climates. Over time, they develop characteristics to allow them to live through extreme weather.
