Monoculture farming has become very popular, given that it allows farmers to increase productivity while greatly minimizing costs. Growing just one food type in a large area is much easier for farmers to control their production and take advantage of the climate, which might be better suited to a particular crop type. However, as time passes, scientist are realizing that the negative effects of monoculture far outweigh its advantages. For example, growing just one type of crop depletes the valuable soil nutrients that plants need, which leads to the excessive use of chemical fertilizers. Furthermore, these monocultures are more susceptible to certain weeds and pests, which have to be controlled by applying large quantities of pesticides on the land. As most people already Know, the effect of fertilizers and pesticides on health and the environment can be devastating. A perfect example of this phenomenon is the decreasing population of honey bees due to the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. So, is there a solution? Scientists have suggested that crop rotation can help minimize the negative effect of monoculture farming. Changing what farmers grow on specific land each season will help improve soil quality and its resilience to pest, therefore fewer chemicals will need to be applied.
a.) What will be a positive result for farmers if they choose monoculture farming?
b.) Will growing just one food crop in a large area of land simplify farmers production?
c.) What will happen to the soil quality if farmers practice monoculture farming?
d.) If farmers practice crop rotation, what will happen?
