My name is Adèle. I'm 19. My favourite time in history is the 1920s. I wish I had been a young woman in the USA then. Women got the vote and enjoyed more freedom. If I had lived in the 1920s, I would have worn a flapper dress and my hair would have been short. I love jazz music from that time - from New Orleans and New York I wish I had heard those songs when they were new and exciting! If I'd been young then, I'd have danced like they do in the musical Chicago and I'd have said that everything was just 'swell!

My name is Ruth. It is 1924 and I am a farmer's wife in the south of the USA. I wish we had more money to buy new clothes. Times are hard and I wish I were not living on a farm. Our hut does not have electricity or water. My husband cannot sell the cotton that he has grown. If only we could sell the cotton, we would be able to find somewhere better to live.

1 What does Adèle like about the 1920s in the USA?
2 Were the 1920s good years for Ruth? Why/Why not?

The 1920s weren't good years for Ruth because she wanted to buy new clothes, but she didn't have the money to do it. Ruth and her husband were poor people living on a farm without electricity nor water, besides not being able to sell the cotton that Ruth's husband had grown
