"while" (mientras) is used when an action occurs at the same time as another action (2 hacciones haciendose al mismo tiempo)
"when" (cuando) is used when an action is interrupted (una accion interrumpida)
ex: i was taking a shower while sofia studied for her test // estaba tomando una ducha mientras sofia estudiaba para su examen
i was taking a shower when sofia knock at the door. // estaba tomando una ducha cuando sofia tocó la puerta.
