Some people spend for the sake of spending. Their wardrobe is full of clothes they never wear. Others splash out on things they can’t afford. It’s a problem that was already recognized as a mental disease in America. It is probably time we do the same here.

Occasionally all of us have already bought something that we didn’t need, a pair of shoes that didn’t quite fit, a T-shirt that didn’t look so good out of the shop and so on. These are usually misjudgments, but for some people shopping can become a compulsion, an addiction as powerful as any other drug. In the beginning they go shopping because they feel low and they hope cheer themselves up by buying some extra. Then it will become as compulsive as any other drug. The depression and anxiety will increase as people become trapped in a downward spiral of debt and despair And the more depressed the bigger the need of going shopping; people go shopping as others drink alcohol or use any other drugs. They look for self-satisfaction but can only find emptiness.

Yet, is it fair to consider it a disease? Shouldn’t we resist the tendency to classifying every human weakness as a psychiatric condition? Nobody is forced to buy what they don’t need. Why should the taxpayers support addictions? People can quite well help themselves by cutting the credit of their own credit cards.
