Simón Bolívar y Palacios was born in Caracas on July 24, 1783. His parents were the landowner Juan Vicente
Bolívar and the lady María Concepción Palacios.
He enjoyed a privileged childhood, but when he was nine years old he was orphaned of father and
mother, victims of tuberculosis. In his childhood he was a student of the illustrious Simón Rodríguez and Andrés Bello. In
1799, he traveled to Spain to complete his education.
Shortly after, he married María Teresa del Toro, who died on their honeymoon in Venezuela. So,
Simón Bolívar returned to Europe. In Austria he met again with Simón Rodríguez and together they examined Rome.
While on Monte Sacro (8-15-1805) he expressed his desire to fight for the freedom of his homeland. Arriving to
Venezuela joined the patriotic conspirators, who in 1810 overthrew Captain General Vicente de

In 1823, he arrived in Lima to fight for the Independence of Peru. In command of the United Liberation Army, he managed

de los Andes, a project that would unite Greater Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. Returning to Bogotá, he could not overcome the
