Las máquinas son dispositivos generados para dirigir, regular o aprovechar la acción de una determinada fuerza. Suelen trabajar a partir de la energía que reciben y que luego transforman para generar un efecto determinado. Las máquinas pueden ser clasificadas a partir de diversos criterios. Algunos son:

1) Según su complejidad:

Máquinas sencillas. Suelen estar compuestas por una sola pieza. Por ejemplo: una pinza, un corta uñas, un cuchillo.

Máquinas complejas. Tienen varias piezas. Por ejemplo: una excavadora, el motor de un auto.

Máquinas muy complejas. Están compuestas por muchísimas piezas. Por ejemplo: un motor de reacción, un cohete espacial.
