On November 29, 1970, a family discovered the badly burned body of a woman in the desolate Isdalen Valley, near Bergen, Norway.

She had labels stuck to her clothes and around her were various objects scattered: bottles, a broken umbrella, a watch.

Carl Halvor Aas, a lawyer who was among the first to be called to the scene, told the BBC that the objects found next to the body appeared to be part of "some kind of ceremony." Later, the police discovered costumes, coded messages and fake passports.

But investigators hit a dead end in trying to uncover the identity of the victim, who was referred to in the press as "Isdal's wife."
