Explicación: El reported speech se emplea cuando queremos recrear oraciones que otras personas han pronunciado en un pasado. Para ello hemos de emplear verbos en dicho tiempo verbal: pretérito (past simple). Hay ciertas "equivalencias":

-AM/IS/ARE [verb to be] = WAS/WERE (* en reported speech *) --> Kelly said she WERE astounded (ejemplo).

-DO = DID (*) --> Kelly said she DID her homework when she had to.

-CAN = COULD (*) --> Kelly said she COULD go to the party.

-HAVE/HAS = HAD (*) --> Kelly said she HAD things to do.

Aclaración: Si la oración es negativa (don't=didn't, can't=couldn't, have/has + verb in past participle=had+ verb in past participle), solamente habrá que cambiar el verbo auxiliar a negativo y conjugarlo en su respectiva forma verbal en pasado.

Aclaración 2: Normalmente, el verbo to say no suele ir seguido de that, por lo que la mayoría de angloparlantes siempre dirán: 'She says ...' en vez de 'She says that ...'
