Public education in many Latin American countries, such as Mexico or Peru, faces serious problems of a different nature. One of them is school desertion, which in recent decades has increased alarmingly. To solve this, projects aimed at providing better supplies and tools for learning, as well as scholarships to motivate students, are usually proposed.
Although one of the main causes of school dropout is the lack of economic resources, it is necessary to understand that it is a much more complex problem. In this way, we find variables related to the educational system, which is considered by students to be boring and inefficient. This opinion is shared by a large sector of the population, including parents.
The traditional study programs taught in public schools are an example of this. Do not take advantage of advances in pedagogy and use teaching methods that are quite outdated. Likewise, the contents are not useful or practical, even more so taking into account the socio-cultural changes that are experienced everywhere.
On the other hand, there is the lack of capacity of the teachers, who are not updated and carry out their lessons with the help of books that they follow to the letter, without contributing anything interesting to the teaching process. This discourages students, who end up considering the entire class as a waste of time.
It is worth mentioning that in some cases there are variables such as unemployment or armed conflict. This reality is common in Latin American countries, where populations farthest from the capital do not enjoy the same quality of life. Greater injustices occur in these areas, and many children must work from an early age to help their families. While on certain occasions, young people end up joining radical groups that defend their rights through armed struggle.
There is no doubt that the countries with the highest dropout rates experience much deeper problems, which at the same time will be defined in cause and effect of this situation. However, it is necessary to implement comprehensive proposals to improve the educational system, both at the public and private levels. Teachers must be constantly evaluated, demonstrating that they are capable of teaching that motivates their students. In addition, the new generations have to receive an education that is consistent with the cultural and technological changes of the globalized world. Only in this way will you be able to actively participate in the development of your country.
