Instead of thinking of the Romans as great inventors, perhaps a more appropriate analogy would be to think of them as the technological multinational Apple of their time.

Apple didn't invent the smartphone, nor did it create the first system for downloading music from the Internet, and electronic tablets were around for more than a decade before the iPad hit the market.

What the American multinational did was take existing concepts and develop them in ways that had not been done before.

And the Romans did exactly the same thing: they took ideas, optimized them and went down in history.
