La reproducción es el proceso mediante el cual se generan nuevos individuos. Permite la continuidad de la vida; sin reproducción, la vida llegaría a su fin.

Respuesta:
Sexual reproduction began at least 1.2 billion years ago, long before the first multicellular life appeared on Earth.
When the first single-celled organisms reproduced, they simply duplicated their DNA (or RNA, a simpler form of nucleic acid with genetic instructions) and divided into two identical cells.
This was an efficient way to increase in number, but since the new organisms were clones of the old ones, it did not help to increase the variety. Genes could mutate spontaneously over time, but there was no quick and effective mechanism to generate diverse combinations of useful genes.
