The stomach, which is attached to the lower end of the esophagus, is an elastic "sac" shaped like the letter "J". It performs three important functions:

store the food you have eaten

break food down into a liquid mixture

slowly empty that fluid into the small intestine

The stomach acts like a blender, mixing and grinding all the food pellets from the esophagus into smaller and smaller pieces. It does this with the help of the strong muscles it has in its walls and the gastric juices it secretes. Apart from breaking down food, gastric juices also help destroy bacteria that the food you eat may contain.
