In Mexico, thousands of protesters denounced the spread of “gender ideology” in marches against same-sex marriage in September 2016. Weeks earlier, some religious groups in Colombia accused the government of wanting to indoctrinate children through of the “gender ideology” in schools; Weeks later, they would accuse government officials of injecting similar forms of treason into a peace deal to end the country's half-century of civil war.

Activists in Spain and Poland have used the same phrase in their fight against the recognition that gender identity and sexual orientation go beyond heterosexuality. Even Pope Francis has raised the idea, asking for priestly compassion for people who suffer from their gender identity or sexual orientation, but rejecting "the indoctrination of gender theory" and its "ideological colonization."

What is this seemingly ubiquitous ideology that has made Catholics and Conservatives so nervous? According to them, it is a worldview, elaborated by lesbian and radical feminist academics, which maintains that gender has nothing to do with the biological differences between men and women, and that it can be chosen at will. They characterize it as a dangerous line of thought that threatens to infect children and destroy democracy.

In fact, the "gender ideology" is an invention of the right. It is a hodgepodge of disparate ideas developed by a diverse group of thinkers over the past 50 years, linked primarily in the minds of their opponents. It really doesn't exist beyond its creators' manifestos and protest banners, but it has already helped them achieve some very real victories.

Gender phobia

The Catholic Church and other conservative groups have been against the notion that gender is a series of behaviors and traits that societies build on top of biological sex for a long time. This perspective runs counter to his ideas of how humanity should be organized, based on "family values." If the traditional roles of husband and wife, father and mother, man and woman are simply social constructs, then identities that go beyond those binary concepts are just as valid. This, in his view, injects chaos into society.

The "gender ideology" is the straw man they invented to fight this threat. Its origins date back to two United Nations summits where gender inequality and women's sexual and reproductive rights were discussed: the 1994 conference on population and development in Cairo and the conference on women in Beijing on next year.
