The Province of New Jersey was one of the English colonies in North America, changed in the US state of New Jersey in 1776. The province was originally established as part of New Holland, but fell under English rule after the surrender of Fort Amsterdam in 1664. The Dutch Republic reaffirmed control for a brief period in 1673-1674. After being composed of two political divisions, East Jersey and West Jersey, they united as a royal colony in 1702. The original boundaries of the province were much larger than those of the current state, extending slightly in a part of the current state of New York, the current border is in 1773.

The Province of New Jersey was originally founded in the 1610s, as part of the New Netherlands colony. The surrender of Fort Amsterdam in September 1664 gave control of the entire Mid Atlantic region to the British in the framework of the Second Anglo-Dutch war. The British justified the attack by saying that Juan Cabot, an Italian under the patronage of King Henry VII, had been the first to discover the place. Peter Stuyvesant, General Director of the colony, ceded control of the colony and was able to obtain guarantees of property rights, inheritance laws, and freedom of religion in transfer articles. After the surrender, Richard Nicolls took over as lieutenant governor of New Amsterdam and the rest of the New Netherlands, including settlements on the west side of the northern river known as Bergen, and along the Delaware River, from which It had been New Sweden
