It was once the domain of children; But today, Halloween is decidedly a grown-up affair, packed with raucous parties, sassy outfits, and expensive decorations.
According to the National Federation of Retailers in America (NRF), an estimated 71.5% of Americans are planning to celebrate Halloween this year, up from 52.5% who did in 2005.
"Much of the growth comes directly from adults who start celebrating Halloween night a month earlier," says NRF spokesperson Kathy Grannis. "We definitely see that it is no longer just a children's holiday."
Also, the trend is global. Over the past five years, the holiday has grown considerably outside of the United States, according to Lisa Morton, author of The Halloween Encyclopedia and Trick or Treat: A History of Halloween.
In Britain, "since 2009 there has been an increase of almost 700% in the sale of adult costumes," he says. It is also growing in Japan, where costumes are a longstanding tradition.
