When spring returned, the whole region was populated with birds and flowers. However, in the garden of the Selfish Giant the winter still remained. Since there were no children, the birds did not sing and the trees forgot to bloom. Only once did a beautiful flower appear in the grass, but as soon as she saw the poster, she felt so sad for the children that she went back underground and fell asleep again.

The only ones who felt comfortable there were Snow and Frost.

"Spring forgot about this garden," they said to each other, "so we will stay here the rest of the year."

Snow covered the earth with its great white cloak and Frost covered the trees with silver. And they immediately invited their sad friend North Wind to spend the rest of the season with them. And the North Wind arrived. He was wrapped in fur and he roared through the garden all day, unhooking plants and knocking down chimneys.

-What a nice place! -said-. We have to tell Hail to come be with us too.

And the Hail came too. Every day he spent three hours drumming on the roofs of the mansion, until he broke most of the tiles. Then he would spin around, running as fast as he could. He was dressed in gray and his breath was like ice.

"I don't understand why spring takes so long to get here," the Selfish Giant was saying when he leaned out the window and saw his garden covered in gray and white, "I hope the weather will change soon."

But spring never came, and neither did summer. Autumn bore golden fruit in every garden, but it bore none to the Giant's garden.

"He is too selfish a giant," said the fruit trees.

In this way, the Giant's garden was forever plunged into winter, and the North Wind and Hail and Frost and Snow danced gloomily among the trees.

Outcome:

Before his eyes was a wonderful spectacle. Through a gap in the wall the children had entered, and had climbed the trees. In each tree was a child, and the trees were so happy to have them back with them that they had covered themselves in flowers and gently swayed their branches over their infant heads. The birds hovered around them singing, and the little ones laughed. It was really a very beautiful sight. Only in a corner winter reigned. It was the farthest corner of the garden and there was a little boy. But he was so small that he could not reach the branches of the tree, and the boy circled the old trunk crying bitterly. The poor tree was still completely covered with frost and snow, and the North Wind blew and roared over it, shaking off the branches that looked like they were about to snap.

-Get up to me, little boy! said the tree, leaning its branches as far as it could. But the child was too little.

The Giant felt his heart melt.

-How selfish I have been! he exclaimed. Now I know why spring didn't want to come this far. I'm going to climb that poor little boy up the tree and then I'm going to knock down the wall. From today my garden will forever be a playground for children.

He was truly sorry for what he had done.

Then he went down the stairs, cautiously opened the door of the house and entered the garden. But as soon as they saw it the children were terrified, they escaped and the garden was left in winter again. Only that little boy in the farthest corner did not escape, because his eyes were so full of tears that he did not see the Giant coming. Then the Giant approached him from behind, took him gently in his hands, and carried him up the tree. And the tree suddenly blossomed, and the birds came to sing in its branches, and the boy embraced the Giant's neck and kissed him. And the other children, when they saw that the Giant was no longer evil, ran happily back. With them spring returned to the garden.

"From now on the garden will be for you, my children," said the Giant, and taking an enormous ax, he broke down the wall.
