What is a myth?

The Greek word mythos, which means tale, gave the English-speaking world the
word myth. Originally, before the invention of writing, myths were passed on
word of mouth. Later these stories of the supernatural were collected in books and
preserved as part of each country's legendary history.
Myths generally have two categories: nature myths and behavioral myths. Nature
myths try to explain the working of the causes or events of the natural world. Behav-
ioral myths try to interpret the feelings, desires, and actions of humans.​
