The growing momentum of community-based tourism (CBT) as a path to sustainable tourism and a strategy for social development forces us to deepen our understanding. In this article we propose analytical focus on the community as a theoretical-methodological tactic. The empirical reference for the research is community tourism (TC) in Ecuador, where five communities have been selected to carry out an in-depth ethnographic study. As a conclusion, we propose a comprehensive framework of the TC that has three basic pillars: the analytical centrality of the communities, the consideration of the TC as a 'translation' rather than as an 'adaptation' to the market, and the strengthening - rather than weakening - character of the TC to the communities. From this a series of qualitative indicators are derived that serve to face, from a theoretical point of view, the general understanding of CBT and are also useful for evaluating the sustainability of CBT projects and experiences.
