Ecuador is a country with vast and unmatched natural and cultural wealth. The diversity of its four regions has given rise to hundreds of thousands of species of flora and fauna. It has around 1640 kinds of birds. The butterfly species border the 4,500, the reptiles 345, the amphibians 358 and the mammals 258, among others. Ecuador is considered one of the 17 countries where the greatest biodiversity on the planet is concentrated, and is also the largest country with biodiversity per km² in the world. Most of its fauna and flora live in 26 areas protected by the State. Likewise, it offers historical attractions such as Quito, gastronomic and a variety of cultures and traditions.1

The country is furrowed from north to south by a volcanic section of the Andes, with 70 volcanoes, the highest being Chimborazo, at 6,310 meters above sea level. 2 The Gulf of Guayaquil and a plain appear to the west of the Andes. wooded and to the east, the Amazon. It is the country with the highest concentration of rivers per square kilometer in the world. In the Ecuadorian territory, which includes the Galapagos Islands 1000 km west of the coast, the densest biodiversity on the planet is found.

The Ministry of Information and Tourism was created on August 10, 1992, at the beginning of the government of Sixto Durán Ballén, who viewed tourism as a fundamental activity for the economic and social development of peoples. Faced with the growth of the tourism sector, in June 1994, the decision was made to separate tourism from information, so that it is exclusively dedicated to promoting and strengthening this activity.
