We use it’s as a short form of it is. We always use an apostrophe (’) between it and the -s.

✗ Its my mom’s birthday today.

We use its to talk about possession when the subject is an object or an animal*. Its never has an apostrophe.

✓ This book’s very old. Its pages are yellow.
✗ This book’s very old. It’s pages are yellow.

*We sometimes use his/her to talk about animals that are our pets.
