We know that the earth is not smooth. There are high
mountains and deep valleys. In some places, too, the sea is very
deep. The highest mountain in the world is over 8,800 metres
above the sea and the deepest part of the sca is 10,900 metres.
But these figures are very small when we compare them to the
size of the earth. Remember that the Equator is 40,000
kilometres fong. If we looked at the earth from a spacecraft
thousands of miles above it, we would not see any mountains or
valleys. The earth would look quite smooth
