What are regular English verbs?

These verbs are the ones that to form the simple past in affirmative sentences and the past participle must add ED or D to the verb (in this lesson we explain everything you need to know about the past participle).

The verbs Play (Play) and Listen (Listen) are regular verbs in English since to use them in the past I participate and the past simple (only in positive phrases) we must use ED. Examples:

Present: I play tennis with my cousin / I play tennis with my cousin

Past: I played tennis with my cousin / I played tennis with my cousin

Present perfect: I have played tennis with my cousin / I have played tennis with my cousin

What are irregular verbs in English?

These verbs are those that break the rule of regulars; that is, irregular verbs are those that do not need ED or D to form their past tense or past participle. Let's exemplify:

The verb Think means Think, its form of the past simple and past participle is Thought. If we look at the form of the past, we can see that it has nowhere the ending ED or D; so, we conclude that Think is an irregular verb for the past simple and participle.

Irregular verbs can have different endings that we group briefly like this:

+ Verbs whose past tense and participle are the same:

Sleep: sleep, slept, slept

Sell: sell, sold, sold

Spend: spend, spent, spent

+ Verbs with exactly the same forms:

Cut: cut, cut, cut

Hitting: hit, hit, hit

Bet: bet, bet, bet
