Normalmente cuando utilizamos when (cuando) y while (mientras) en inglés hacemos una combinación de dos tiempos verbales: el pasado simple y el pasado continuo. Esto ocurre porque mientras estamos expresando una acción que estaba en progreso en el pasado se acción se cruza con otra que en cierta medida interrumpe a la primera, es decir, tienes que dejar de hacer lo que estabas haciendo para atendar a la nueva circunstancia.
