Yet the brilliant girl was able to overcome all those handicaps, to graduate from a college with honors and become a useful citizen. I must say there was nothing wrong with Helen Keller when she was born. Her father and mother were very proud of their pretty baby, who tried to say “pa-pa” and “ma-ma”. For nineteen months Helen grew bigger and stronger. She was able to walk when she was a year old; she could say a few words. But one day the child fell ill. She must have been very ill. For days she was laid up with a high fever and soon the parents learned that their darling would never be able to see and hear. The little child was now doomed to a life of silence and darkness. She could not hear what was said to her and did not know how to talk, she was unable to play with other children. When Helen was 6 years old her parents took her to Baltimore and then to Washington to famous doctors to find out if they could do something to make her hear and see again, but the doctors could do nothing. The child was hopelessly deaf. Dr. Bell said the Kellers should address the Perkins Institution for the blind in Boston and ask if they could send someone to help the child. The Coldrum Elongated Burial Mound, also known as Coldrum Stones or Adscombe Stones, is an elongated chamber burial mound located near the village of Trottiscliffe in Kent County, South East England. Probably built in the fourth millennium BC, during Britain's initial Neolithic period, it is in a state of ruin.
Archeologists have established that the monument was built by pastoralist communities shortly after the introduction of agriculture to Britain from continental Europe. As part of an architectural tradition of elongated burial mounds that spanned all of Neolithic Europe, Coldrum stones belong to a localized regional variant of burial mounds produced in the vicinity of the River Medway, now known as the Medway megaliths. Of these, it is in the best state of conservation. It is located near the elongated Addington and Chestnuts burial mounds on the western side of the river. On the east side of Medway are two other elongated burial mounds, Kit's Coty House and Little Kit's Coty House, as well as possible remains of others, known as the Coffin and White Horse stones respectively.
Constructed of earth and around fifty megaliths of local Sarsen stone, it consisted of an almost rectangular trapezoidal earth mound surrounded by curbs. Within the eastern end of the burial mound was a stone chamber in which human remains were deposited on at least two separate occasions in time during the early Neolithic period. Osteoarchaeological analysis of these remains has shown that they are of no less than seventeen individuals, a mixture of men, women, and children. One, if not more, of the bodies had been dismembered prior to burial, which may reflect a funerary tradition of excarnation and secondary burial. As with other burial mounds, Coldrum has been interpreted as a tomb to house the remains of the dead, perhaps as part of a belief system involving veneration of ancestors, although archaeologists have suggested that it may also have had more. religious connotations, rituals and cultural uses.
