URGEEENTEEE!!!!!
CONDITIONALS: AFFIRMATIVE AND NEGATIVE
Read the news article about a difficulty two tourists experienced while
traveling to Toronto. Surprisingly, this problem led to the formation of a new
friendship.
Before writing in any answers, read the article all the way through.
Fill in each blank with the correct form of the verb (in brackets). Use
conditional types 0, 1, 2 or 3. Choose the affirmative or negative form of each
verb, as appropriate.
Imagine that you are unemployed and have a family to support. What (1. do)
would you do if you (2. found) _____________ a wallet in the street? (3.
keep) _____________ you _____________ the money if you (4. know)
_____________ no one would ever find out?
When Cristina Mendez faced that situation last week, she brought the wallet to
the police, who traced it to Mr. and Mrs. Suzuki, tourists visiting Toronto from Japan.
The Suzukis were pleasantly surprised to see the wallet - and their money - again. “If
we (5. get) _____________ the money back, we _____________ borrow money for
the rest of our trip. It (6. take) _____________ a long time to pay back that debt,”
beamed Mrs. Suzuki.
The police officer who handled the situation was not surprised, however. “Most
people are honest,” commented Sgt. Abdul Amin, of Toronto Police Services. “If they
(8. be) _____________, our job (9. be) _____________ even harder than it already
is.”
Did Mrs. Mendez have a hard time making her decision? “Frankly, yes. We need
the money. I found Mr. Suzuki’s wallet lying next to the curb at the corner of Yonge
and Dundas Streets. I (10. see) _____________ the wallet unless I (11. glance)
_____________ down at just that moment. For a little while, it seemed like fate had
sent it to us. But whenever I (12. have) _____________ a difficult decision to make, I
always (13. discuss) _____________ the problem with my husband. We both knew
what the right decision was in this situation. We always tell our kids, if something (14.
belong) _____________ to you, (15. return) _____________ it. Our kids (16. follow)
_____________ the rules unless we (17. obey) _____________ the rules
ourselves.”
The Suzuki’s have offered Mrs. and Mr. Mendez a reward, and a friendship has
sprung up between the two families. “If the Mendez family ever (18. come)
_____________ to Japan, they (19. be) _____________ our guests,” said Mr. and
Mrs. Suzuki.
