As they did almost every morning, the two elderly friends were sat slowly enjoying a steaming cup of warming coffee at a corner table. The first looked up at the rapidly darkening skies outside and quoted an old saying:

“When the wind’s in the south, the rain’s in its mouth.“

For a moment, the other man said nothing, but simply continued to stare out of the window. Then, as they put on their heavy overcoats, scarves and gloves, and prepared to leave, he smiled and added:

“My grandfather told me a long time ago that the ‘south wind warms the aged‘“. Stepping out of the warmth of the coffee house into the chill of an early spring morning, the first man said gruffly:

“I bet he never spent his winters in Nebraska!”

Como lo hacían casi todas las mañanas, los dos amigos ancianos se sentaban lentamente disfrutando de una taza de café humeante y caliente en una mesa del rincón. El primero miró a los cielos que se oscurecieron rápidamente afuera y citó un viejo dicho:

“Cuando el viento está en el sur, trae la lluvia en su boca.”

Por un momento, el otro hombre no dijo nada, sino que simplemente siguió mirando por la ventana.

Luego a medida que se ponían sus abrigos pesados, bufandas y guantes, y se preparan para irse, sonrió y añadió:

“Mi abuelo me dijo hace mucho tiempo que el “viento del sur calienta a los viejos“. Al salir de la calidez de la casa de café en el frío de una mañana de primavera, el primer hombre dijo con voz ronca:

“¡Apuesto a que nunca pasó sus inviernos en Nebraska!”
