Darwin, the general lines of the modern theory of evolution.
He made expeditions through South America with important botanical and
entomological contributions; he is also considered a great anthropologist and
geographer. Although he studied architecture and worked as a geographer and
architect engineer, his interest in biology appeared in 1845 when he decided to
devote himself completely to natural history.
Three years later, after having participated in numerous excursions in search of new
specimens for the elaboration of his herbarium, he made an expedition to the
Amazon with his compatriot Henry Walter Bates from 1854 to 1862.
He traveled to Australia to investigate the geographical distribution of animals and observed that there were
fundamental zoological differences between Asian and Australian species. He established the concept of Wallace's
dividing line that separates the animals of Australian origin from those of Asian origin.
This research allowed Wallace to independently develop his own theory of evolution, which he communicated to
Charles Darwin in 1858; the ideas of both were published in London , 1860. In Wallace's contribution to the early
knowledge of Darwin's theory of natural selection, it is worth nothing his clarification on the concept of mimicry and
on his various studies biogeographic.
His works include Travels through the Amazon and the Black River (1853), On the tendency of varieties to deviate from
the original type (1858), The Malay Archipelago (1869), Contributions to the theory of natural selection (1870), The
geographical distribution of animals (1876), The place of man in the Universe (1903) and The world of life (1910). The
interesting and abundant collections, especially entomological and ornithological, that Wallace contributed from his
expeditions through America, and which reached the number of 125,000 copies, earned him a gold medal from the
Paris Geographical Society. He was also a member of numerous scientific societies.
