The Red List of Endangered Species

The world Conservation Union (IUCN) prooduces an annual Red List of animal and plant species in danger of extinction. In 2011, the list named 51.000 species. Some species are closer to the extinction than others, and a few of them, including the Panamian golden frog, might already be extinc.

Well-loved species that could dissapear soon include the Sumatran orangutan. Only 6.600 reamin, and they are under constant threat from habitat loss. Another great ape in danger is the western gorilla, due to deforastation, hunting and diseases such as Ebola virus. At current rates of decline, it may not survive beyond the next decade.

Ocean life is also in danger. Some species of coral have already disappeared, and another 40 percent are threatened by pollution, shipping and fishing. Coral provide a place to live for fish and other animals, so if corals become extinct, other species could follow.

It may be possible to save some endangered species, but it is a constant battle. An intensive conservation program increased the numbers of the gharial, a cocodrile found in India, from 180 to 430. But when the program stopped, the number of gharial dropped to under 200 again, although in 2012 more than 2.000 hatched in India’s National Chambal Sanctuary, so there might be hope yet. However, those gharials that live in the wilds are still very much in danger.
