The frog that wanted to be a real frog By Augusto Monterroso
Once upon a time there was a frog who wanted to be a real frog, and every day he tried hard. At first, he bought a mirror
in which he looked at himself for a long time looking for his longed-for authenticity.
Sometimes he seemed to find it and sometimes not, depending on the mood of that day or time, until he got tired of it
and put the mirror in a trunk. At last she thought that the only way to know her own worth was in the opinion of the people,
and she began to comb her hair and dress and undress (when she had no other recourse) to see if others approved of
her and recognized that she was a real frog.
One day she noticed that what they most admired about her was her body, especially her legs, so she began to squat
and jump to get better and better haunches, and she felt that everyone was applauding her. And so she kept on making
efforts until, willing to do anything to make them consider her a real frog, she let her legs be ripped off, and the others ate
them, and she still managed to hear bitterly when they said what a good frog, what it looked like chicken.
