The Discovery of a Different World Ecuador is a country with four regions: The coast, highlands, Amazon, and the Galapagos Islands. The Amazon is a region full of wonders, but also full of dangers. In 1541, Gonzalo Pizarro started a trip from Quito to the Amazon. Once in the jungle, he and his men sailed, but they didn't find what they were looking for. Instead, they were in awful conditions, so hungry that they ate their dogs and horses. Pizarro sent Francisco de Orellana,. his second in command, and 50 other men to find food and be back in 15 days. However, after they separated, it was impossible for Orellana to come back. So, he was elected captain of his crew, and together they sailed the entire Amazon River until they reached the Atlantic Ocean. For months, Fray Gaspar de Carvajal wrote a book about crossing the continent and the experiences the crew had to live through: the lack of food, the diseases, the dangers and emergencies that they had to face until they finished their journey. This book is very valuable for literature and history.

Dangers in the Amazon If you have ever been in the Amazon, you know how amazingly beautiful and big it is; full of wonders we cannot find anywhere else. However, unless you are an expert on plants and animals, you should be informed of the risks there are before traveling to the Amazon. First, illnesses. It is not uncommon for tourists to get sick while traveling through the Amazon. The biggest threat are mosquitoes which carry yellow fever and malaria. Another issue visitors may find is getting sick from food or water. Their immune system is not used to the different bacteria in the food and water. Also, the weather can be the cause of problems. The wet season in the Amazon is no joke. It lasts 6 months, from October to May, and in March and April there are heavy rains which can lead to floods and very strong river currents.
