Simón Bolívar (Called the Liberator; Caracas, Venezuela, 1783 - Santa Marta, Colombia, 1830) Caudillo of Spanish-American independence. Born into a family of Basque origin of Venezuelan nobility, Simón Bolívar forged the political ideology of him by reading the thinkers of empiricism and illustration (Locke, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Rousseau) traveling through Europe. In Paris he made contact with the ideas of the French Revolution and personally met Napoleon and the German naturalist Humboldt.
