Public establishments, such as schools, nurseries, nursing homes, hospitals, prisons and canteens in public establishments can be essential for everyone to eat healthy food and thus prevent the 8 million deaths that are registered every year because of unhealthy eating.
The objective of the new Plan of Action to formulate and implement public policies related to the acquisition of food and catering services for the sake of food - in English prepared by the WHO is to increase the availability of healthy food through the establishment of nutritional criteria for foods served and sold in public institutions, as well as reducing preventable diseases and deaths due to high consumption of sodium, salt, sugars and fats, particularly trans fatty acids, and insufficient intake of whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables.
