FALSE MEMORIES
EU
You might/can/could think that your memories are
accurate, but this isn't always correct. If someone tells
you that you saw something happen, you are able to /
may / may not begin to think that it's true. There's a good
chance you'll believe it because we 3 couldn't/may
aren't able to tell the difference between our real memory
and the memory that has been "planted" in our brains.
In one experiment, people were shown pictures of a man
putting a stolen purse in his jacket pocket. Later, they were
told that he had put the purse in his trouser pocket. Many
of the people could / might not/ couldn't remember the
photograph correctly and were positive that the man had
put the purse in his trouser pocket. It seems that what
we hear and read 6 can/ may not/ couldn't change our
memories. This is a serious problem because it means
that judges can/can't/may always believe what people
say in court. For one thing, someone can't/might /
wasn't able to blame the wrong person for a crime.
What's more, an innocent person might not / may not/
may confess to a crime because someone convinced them
that they actually did it!
