f you were stranded in the wilderness and managed to find food and survive, you might start to realize how lucky you are, and how you need to stay healthy so you can take advantage of all the luck you can get!

Chapter 14 of Hatchet starts with Brian thinking about how mistakes can be deadly in the wilderness. He contrasts this to life in the city. If he hurt himself in the city, he could just head to the doctor. If he hurt himself in the wilderness, he might not be able to hunt, and starve to death. He reflects, ''funny little mistakes could snowball so that while you were still smiling at the humor you could find yourself looking at death.''

One night when he is sleeping, he hears something near his campsite. He wakes to find a skunk digging into his pile of turtle eggs. He decides to defend his stash and throws a handful of sand at the skunk. The skunk sprays Brian directly in the face, and he is blinded for two hours.

The skunk eats the rest of Brian's eggs. Brian learns an important lesson from this: ''Nothing in nature was lazy. He had tried to take a shortcut and paid for it with his turtle eggs'' Food is the most important thing in nature, Brian concludes, and work for that food is what drives nature. This realization spurs Brian into some important actions.
