Of Mice and Men is a book by John Steinbeck that follows the story of two brothers, one of them being mentally challenged, and their search for work in plantations during the slavery era in the United States, and the conflicts that the limited understanding of reality by a mentally impaired person brought upon them.
The book starts with George and Lenny, the two brothers, looking for work after a problematic situation arose between Lenny (the mentally challenged one) and a little girl. They later find themselves in a plantation where they're offered a job, which they take. The plantation owners' wife takes a special affinity towards Lenny later on, and corners him as she flirts with him. In the middle of this, Lenny loses his temper and the situation ends with said wife being murdered. George finds out about this and gets away with Lenny, with the plantation owner and his crew following suit, looking for a kill.
George, at this moment, realizes that this cycle of uncontrollable behavior and mishaps will continue on, and kills Lenny while distracting him with the thought of a farm, a place he had created in his imagination where they would retire. The book ends with George walking back towards the plantation, with a thousand-yard stare and unable to speak.
