Paul Sheldon is a famous writer of romance novels set in the Victorian era, whose main character is called Misery Chastain. His most recent novel, "The Son of Misery" presents the death of its main character as part of the writer's plans to meddle in new literary genres and plans to start with the publication of the manuscript of his latest work "Fast Cars." By the time the nurse returns, she forces Paul to burn the only "Fast Cars" manuscript to the pain of the writer who has vowed to kill Annie since that day. The nurse's plan is to force her favorite writer to write the sequel to "Son of Misery" in order to bring Misery back to life and to do this she provides him with a typewriter once he recovers to move around a Wheelchair. After Annie murders a police officer who stopped at the farm, Paul steals a can of flammable liquid from the garage and eventually ends the novel.
Before announcing the news to Annie, Paul asks her for a few things to "celebrate" the release of his next novel, and by the time Annie returns to Paul's room, she surprises him by burning the manuscript, starting a fierce fight in which Paul Hardly he manages to apparently kill Annie and leave the room.
