Mariana de Paredes Flores was born on October 31, 1618 in the city of Quito, at that time of the Royal Court of the same name, belonging to the Catholic Monarchy. Her father was Captain Jerónimo de Paredes Flores y Granobles, and her mother the aristocrat Mariana Jaramillo, descending through the paternal line of Spanish conquerors whom the Crown recognized with its own coat of arms.1 Orphan from the age of seven, she was tutored by her older sister named Jéronima and her husband, Captain Cosme de Miranda, who raised her as their daughter and understood her inclination towards the penitent life.2

At an early age, she showed a precocious religious life, prayer and charity towards the poor, inviting her nieces (of the same age) to pray the rosary, make the Stations of the Cross, evangelize pagans and help the destitute.3 Aided by her brother-in-law, on two occasions tried unsuccessfully to enter the religious community, so he decided to serve God in a secular way, living in a room that was built for him on the site that his sister Jerónima had inherited1 and that today corresponds to the choir of the El Carmen Alto monastery. Her first spiritual guide was the Jesuit Juan Camacho, who motivated her to take the vow of perpetual virginity.2

Mariana de Jesús had innate gifts for music, so she played the guitar and vihuela beautifully, in addition to the fact that she had a harmonious voice that she shared through singing. He had learned to read, sew, weave and embroider, which allowed him to keep his time occupied and away from the sin of idleness.3 He set out to fulfill that command of Jesus: "Whoever wishes to follow me, let him deny himself," and As a child, she began to mortify herself in eating, drinking, and sleeping. She frequently retired to practice penance in her room, which she stripped of all furniture except a coffin and a skull that reminded her that she was going to die and she would have to give an account to God; she in it she slept several nights each week, and the remaining time she was filled with pillows that resembled a corpse.1

Among her most famous spiritual guides was Father Hernando de la Cruz, who made a beautiful portrait of the young woman and dedicated a poem to her. On November 6, 1639, and on the advice of her confessors, she became a tertiary of Saint Francis of Assisi (since in the Society of Jesus there is no third order, as she would have wanted so much) .2

She died on Friday, May 26, 1645, and preceded by an immense funeral procession, and the most important characters of the city attended the mass, as well as hundreds of poor people whom she had once helped.

Mariana of Jesus de ParedesMariana or María Ana de Jesús de Paredes; October 31, 1618 – May 26, 1645 is a Catholic saint and was the first person to be canonized from what is now Ecuador. She was a recluse who is said to have sacrificed herself for the salvation of her city. She was beatified by Pope Pius IX in 1853 and canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1950. She is the patron saint of Ecuador and venerated at the Church of the Society of Jesus in Quito. Her feast day is celebrated on May 26 by the nation and on May 28 by the Franciscan Order.

From a very young age she showed a great inclination towards piety and an enormous appreciation for purity and charity towards the poor. At the age of seven, she invited her nieces, who were almost the same age as her, to pray the rosary and to do the Stations of the Cross.

She learned the catechism so well that at the age of eight she was admitted to make First Communion (which was an exception at that time). The priest who gave her the religion test was amazed at how well this girl understood the truths of the catechism. Hearing a sermon about the large number of people that she still could not receive the message of the religion of Christ, she decided to go with a group of companions to evangelize pagans.
