Alicia is sitting with her older sister on the riverbank. Her sister reads a book and Alicia is bored and sleepy. Alicia looks at her sister's book and it seems quite graceless. She thinks, "And what's the use of a book without drawings or dialogues?", Chapter 1, page 1. Suddenly, a White Rabbit hurries past her, saying out loud that she's late. The rabbit takes a watch out of his pocket to see the time and at that moment Alicia jumps and chases him. He sees the Rabbit slide down the rabbit hole and follow him through a tunnel until suddenly he falls into what appears to be a very deep well.
Alicia falls for a long time and wonders if she will fall through all the earth. During his fall he sees on the walls of the well, cabinets, book shelves and photos. She doesn't have much to keep herself busy during her long fall, so she practices some of her lessons and has imaginary conversations with her cat Dina. Finally, Alicia falls to the ground but is not hurt. He gets up and continues to chase the White Rabbit.
