He was honest and hardworking. One day his wife said she was hungry and unhappy. The woodcutter said he was sorry, but they didn't have any money. He went out to cut wood. The woodcuffer worked all morning. Then, because he was so tired and hungry, he dropped his axe and it fell into the river. He was very sad because he couldn't buy a new one. Just then, the god of the river appeared and spoke to him. The god said the woodcutter was careless. The woodcutter said he was sorry, but he was fired and hungry. 3 The god was impressed with the woodcutter's honesty. He found the old iron axe and then he said he was going to give the woodcutter all the axes as a reward. The god offered him a choice of three beautiful new axes, one made of bronze, one made of silver and another made of gold. The god held up the bronze axe and said he thought it was the woodcutter's axe. The woodcutter shook his head. The god then held up the other two axes. The woodcutter said they weren't his axes either. He said his axe was an old iron axe The woodcutter carried the axes home to his wife and told her they were rich. She was very happy and she said she loved him. They bought a new house and had many happy children.
