Some may say that, when it comes to movies preferences, we members of the audience come in all sizes. That’s probably true, but there’s no point in denying that some films have a special place in everybody’s heart, either you love them or you despise them.
One good example of this kind of movie is The Matrix. I don’t think there is a single person left on Earth who hasn’t seen this film yet. At least, I take for granted that the humanity as a whole knows the name and what it is about. Although, sometimes I like to ask myself just that question: what is The Matrix really about?
Let’s, for starters, leave behind it’s sequels: The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions; and focus on the original The Matrix. On the verge of the Twenty-first Century, this amazing film comes out and not only does it break box office records, but it also makes it’s actors famous worldwide.
At first sight, it’s a film about this guy, Neo, who finds out that the reality he has lived in since he was born is actually fake. It’s no more than an artificial existence that keeps him alive, while he is really connected to a big energy producing system and floats unconscious in some kind of artificial uterus.
Is that all? One may say that’s pretty much it, yes. But I usually enjoy thinking about it as a metaphor: this world we’re living in right now, connected to each other through computers, half awake and half asleep through our eight-hours-a-day jobs, isn’t it at least a little bit similar to Neo’s existence in The Matrix?
