A Dangerous Journey to Safety Aisha, a nine-year-old girl, used to have an ordinary life with her parents and three siblings in her village in Iraq. When Islamic State took control of their village, life changed. They started living a routine of violence, and food and other products disappeared from the stores. Children were forced to drop out of school and teenagers forced to fight. When the Iraqi Army exchange fire with IS and their village was heavily bombed, her father decided it was time to leave in search of safety. Taking only two bags, they silently left their home on foot to avoid detection. Despite their efforts to move quickly and quietly, they were discovered by a sniper who opened fire in their direction, but fortunately he missed them. Two hours later they reached a safe place and were taken to a temporary shelter before being transferred to Dibad camp. But the family was separated. Women and children were taken in one vehicle and men in another. They all caught various illnesses while at the camp facilities. The family was finally reunited seventeen days later. After a long, difficult and dangerous journey, being taken to different refugee camps, they managed to enter Greece. After spending a year relocating within that country, Aisha’s family settled down in Thessaloniki where she is now in the fourth grade at a Greek elementary school. During their first year in the country, they stayed in two different open accommodation sites and two apartments. She had to change schools four times before moving to her current neighborhood and enrolling in her current school. Now, years later and far from home, her father is working again and her family is struggling to adapt to their new life.
