The vaquita marina and its protection in Mexico.

The vaquita marina is one of the endemic species of Mexico and lives in the north of the Gulf of California, it is the only Mexican marine mammal of the family phocoenidae (true porpoises)

This mammal is in danger of extinction (endangered). The population of this animal has decreased very quickly and is at risk of disappearing, in 1997 there were around 570 individuals left; in 2015 less than 60 and in 2022 there are only 10 individuals left.

Why is it in danger of extinction (endangered)?

its main cause is the fishing of the totoaba fish, while this fish is fished by mistake (mistake) the vaquita is also captured in the fishing nets.

The pollution of the place where you live.

We can also include the illegal (illegal) fishing of the vaquita porpoise.

Reasons why we should protect the vaquita porpoise:

• This animal, like any other living being, deserves to be respected and allowed to live.

• Being a predator of various fish, its presence is important in that part of the gulf because it regulates some processes and cycles of that ecosystem which will be affected in its absence.

• Also being prey for sharks, they serve as a food source for sharks.

• They do not attack (attack) human beings.

How can we help:

We must follow the fishing rules of that area.

Refusing to consume the totoaba fish.

Incite and ask the Mexican government to protect the species.
