An ayllu or ayllo (in Quechua or Aymara) is a form of extended family community originating in the Andean region with a common descent - real or supposed - working collectively (see ayni) in a common property territory. The ayllu was a group of families considered to be descended from a distant common ancestor.
Ayllu is the traditional form of a community in the Andes, especially between the Quechuas and Aymaras. They are a model of indigenous local government in all the Andes of the region of South America, particularly in Bolivia and Peru. The ayllus functioned before the Inca conquest, in the colonial period and they remain valid until our days.
