I will eventually help you out, but first…
yards is NOT an valid unit of measure for area. I am going to assume you mean square yards.
One cannot use 3.14 for pi. π is what it is, an irrational number that cannot be written with a finite number of decimal digits. I am going to assume your homework said to APPROXIMATE π as 3.14. I am further going to guess that you were told not to use your calculator. This approximation makes this problem trivial.
I'm hoping you were not given this assignment without having first been taught that the area of a circle is πr2 . What then would be the area of a quarter circle? Just divide that by four Aquarter circle=πr24
Now, plug in the value you were given:
πr24=12.56yd2
Make your approximation for π
3.14r24=12.56yd2
Divide both sides by 3.14
r24=4yd2 (← see, nice numbers)
Multiply both sides by 4
r2=16yd2
Take square root of both sides (ignore the negative root)
r=4yd (note that you need to take root of the unit as well)
The answer to your homework problem is “4 yards”
