Summary: This paper analyses the social construction of identity, in order to identify the elements
that cause the constitution of a negative self-identity among Indian peoples. Also, to point out how
the devaluation was provoked by western people, and to underline some of the factors that influence
in the devaluation process. Therefore the author remarks how the process works out against Indian
societies and to the advantage of western societies. The author claims revaluating Indian identity is
an alternative for them to overcome their feelings of inferiority, and a way of reaching a true plural
society. Lastly, the author shows some examples of identity-revaluated projects developed by
anthropologists
