Ecological printing

So what is ecological printing? It involves applying green innovations to the three main elements of the printing process - printing technology, ink, and printing materials - to minimize impact on our environment. These green technologies help reduce pollution, waste and energy consumption during production. They also help reduce printing costs and save the planet.

Printing technologies

The most eco-efficient printing technologies are on the rise. Innovators are trying to improve or devise fast and efficient printing methods that consume less energy and resources and produce less waste.

Waterless printing, for example, is an improvement over traditional offset printing that uses water to form non-images in printing. Produces VOCs or volatile organic compounds and other hazardous substances such as waste. However, waterless printing eliminates all of that.

Instead of water, waterless printing uses a silicone coating to repel ink. This technique does not release VOCs, reduces operating time and waste, and offers a wider color gamut and better image definition.

Green inks

Petroleum or plastic based inks contain compounds and chemicals that are harmful to the environment. Ecological printing has found a non-polluting alternative in ecological inks. These inks use organic ingredients such as soy or vegetables in their production.

Soy-based ink, in particular, is a fantastic alternative that reproduces the effects of petroleum-based inks but without the toxic side effects for the environment. Some argue that it produces brighter and more vibrant colors compared to other inks.

Another well-known organic ink comes from vegetables. However, unlike soy based inks, it does not produce the same results as its soy counterpart and is slightly more expensive.

Printing materials

There are important innovations in ecological printing in the printing materials used. These products come from recycled materials or other sustainable materials that are 100% biodegradable or recyclable. The materials used also come from sustainable suppliers and use little or no chemicals in their processing.

Recystar Nature Eco Paper Flyers, for example, may look like normal uncoated flyer paper, but it uses 100% recyclable fibers in its production. Bio Top recyclable paper, by contrast, uses a chlorine-free bleaching process with no optical bleaching agents.

In addition to paper, Ecological Printing also includes other printing products such as roll up banners and pens. Helloprint, for example, offers 100% PVC-free Rollup Eco Banners in its selection of organic products. These banners come from polypropylene, a recyclable thermoplastic polymer that has high heat resistance.

Some green companies create entirely new materials for use in specific green products. For example, the company NatureWorks developed a PLA plastic made from vegetable fibers called Ingeo to create vegetable pens. This pen is 80% biodegradable and compostable. Its production uses only a third of the energy required for basic plastic, which reduces energy consumption and production costs.

Going green is more important now than ever. The faster we can reduce our carbon footprint, the faster it will take for the planet to heal. While the transition to more sustainable business practices takes time, green printing is a great place to start.
