Whenever someone needs help immediately because they are injured or in danger of getting injured, you must call 911. For example, in the following situations, call 911:

As a dispatcher, the life of other people depends on your understanding of their situation, and a quick response. We should also show empathy for people even when situations are not an emergency. In simple terms, consider how the other person feels.

Qualities of a 911 Dispatcher
If someone asked the 911 dispatcher, Donna Reneau, she would confirm that a lack of empathy can destroy your career as a 911 dispatcher. In August 2019, Debbie Stevens called 911 at 4 am after she was swept away by floodwaters while she was delivering newspapers in her car. However, Reneau, the dispatcher, did not handle the call very well. In the police recordings, she asked where Ms. Stevens was, and repeated to a sobbing Ms. Stevens, “This will teach you next time, don’t drive in the water” and “You put yourself in danger”. Stevens died from drowning after 22 minutes on the line with Reneau begging for help and explaining that she could not swim. The police department informed the public that after the event Debbie Reneau handed in her resignation.
