The Sonoran Desert, sometimes also called the Gila Desert after the Gila River, is a desert located in North America whose extent is shared between two countries. Politically it is divided between the United States and Mexico, covering much of Arizona and California, as well as part of the Mexican states of Baja California and Sonora, for which it is named. It is one of the hottest and largest deserts in the world, with an area of 311,000 km².12
The desert is found in the northern reaches of the Gulf of California, from northeastern Baja California, through southeastern California and southwestern Arizona, and into western Sonora. It extends over the regions of the Lower Colorado valley, the Vizcaino and the Sonoran plain.
The Sonoran Desert is subdivided into seven regions: Lower Colorado Valley, Arizona Highlands, Sonoran Plain, Sonoran Foothills, Central Gulf Coast, El Vizcaino, and La Magdalena. Many ecologists consider that, in fact, the regions of El Vizcaíno and La Magdalena, which occupied the western side of the Baja California peninsula, are a separate ecoregion.
